“Homeless Poem”

Hollow eyes follow you
As you traipse through our land
We're only trying to survive
But you'd never understand
You avert your uneasy gaze
And try to close your mind
But in this petty world of ours,
We've been condemned by the blind.
Susan was a nighttime nurse
She held vigil for the sick
She stares at you hands outstretched
She knows what makes you tick
Randy worked a factory job
Piecing our cars at Ford
Now he shivers, all in tears
And cries out to our Lord
None of us asked for this
No one wants to fall
With solace only at bottle bottom
The money makes us crawl
Crawl, for a better future
Beg for our salvation
Instead, we reach and grasp
Hunger and emancipation
Someday the world may know
With effort the world will try
At least, we hold some hope in this
Though likely, many more will die
But seek our dear watcher
As we look to struggle through
Please, alleviate our damnation
For someday it could be you
This morning I shared your poem for a legislators breakfast, there were 200 people there. It was well received. Thank you, Anne
